If you're anything like me, you're constantly missing the boat. How many times have I found out about a cool military opportunity my family could use, exactly one day after the application deadline?

Scholarship deadlines are among the most frustrating for military spouses. You finally figured out how to make going back to school work for your military family. You found a school and degree program that not only matches your complicated schedule, but also gives you a path to a career where you might actually find a job, despite 423 military moves. Now you just need a little cash to make it happen.

Except all of the available military spouse scholarship deadlines were last week. Of course.

So when I saw the National Military Family Association's (NMFA) announcement about their scholarship expansion, I was excited. Instead of the annual scholarship deadline each spring, it now is, well, deadline-free.

That means military spouses can apply for the scholarship year-round. And unlike many available scholarships, NMFA's can be used on a variety of degree programs -- not just associate or bachelor degrees.

NMFA's scholarship is even available to the military services outside the Pentagon. That means that in addition to Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Army active duty and retiree and National Guard or Reserve spouses, spouses of Coasties as well as commissioned officers with the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) also can apply. Surviving Gold Star spouses who have not remarried can also apply, as can divorced spouses who meet the 20/20/20 benefits rule.

The average scholarship grant is about $1,000, according to NMFA. Go here to learn more and apply.
